December 2020 Zoom Meeting

We closed out 2020 in not the same way we have closed out year's in the past.  Good thing we all know how to 'compensate' our stitching and we are able to 'compensate' for our meetings.

First off, a continued BIG THANK to the ladies (and gentleman) who organize, coordinate and make our Zoom Meeting possible.

Please, please, please.....if you are participating in our Zoom Meeting and you are NOT the speaking or making a comment, please put your device on mute.   Many of us watch the meeting using the "speaker"view" instead of "gallery view".  Speaker view allows the active speaker to be the only person you see on your screen.   When members do not mute their device, every sneeze, rustle, every noise in their background, etc., activates them as the speaker.    Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

President Linda D. welcomed everyone.   The Treasurer's Report was reviewed and  discussion on current and pending bills was had.

Linda welcomed new members who then introduced themselves.  We had new members from New York Delaware and Pennsylvania, not to mention existing members from Tennessee, Luxembourg, Florida and all over participating in the meeting.   I think there were 44 in attendance.

Membership - Sign up now!   We already had 50 renewals received by the December meeting.  Dues for 2021 is due by the end of January.   Complete and mail this MEMBERSHIP FORM

December 2020 Program

Barbara Hutson of Queenstown Samplers joined our meeting via Zoom.  Barbara gave us an overview of her history.  She shared her knowledge of what different sampler motifs indicate and also what origin the motifs are indicative of.   Before purchasing any sampler, she researches the girl who stitched the sampler.   Her process for creating a reproduction is first to research, then to stitch and to chart. When charting from an original sampler, she selects the colors she will use based on the color of the floss on the back of the original sampler.  Members had sent photos to Barbara prior to the meeting and she discussed the individual samplers and share what her knowledge about each.

She also shared with us many of her own samplers and gave tidbits of information on each.  She discussed her process for charting a sampler.  Although she usually is stitching on only one sampler at a time, she often has three or more in various stages of being reproduced.  Some may in the charting phase or being stitched by model stitchers.    For her samplers, she has them stored as "Charted" or "Uncharted".   Each type is stored in archival/air tight boxes.   They are store together, unless a particular sampler is fragile.  It is then stored separately.

Barbara gave some tips on buying a sampler -
  • When buying on line, make sure to read the description thoroughly; verify what is being sold is NOT a poster;
  • In person buys are best;
  • Make sure you have name and phone number of seller;
  • Check out Amy Finkels website and review her tab on Fraud/Finding an Antique sampler;
  • Fraud has been found by sellers adding or removing stitches;
  • Rely on an Auction House or sell that monitors eBay.
Barbara has several new releases and several she is working on.  As with all her charts, Barbara includes the history of the stitcher and any other information of interest she uncovered while doing her research.   Any Queenstown Sampler chart ordered from Salty Yarns in December will receive a 15% discount - Let Salty Yarns know you are a DVHSG member when ordering.   Barbara took information on a couple of member's samplers and will be getting back to them with more detail on each.

What a wealth of knowledge Barbara is and how lovely of her to share it with us.   Thank you Barbara!

November 2020 Zoom Meeting

First of all, we would like to reach out with a BIG thank you to all the techie people that are setting up and running our Zoom Meetings.   Caryl, Linda, Evalyn and Jon we can't thank you enough.  It is so nice to 'see' everyone and to hear about their new projects and just share the fellowship.   Just like missing an in-person meeting, we have all grown to hate to miss a  Zoom Meeting.     Not only are our monthly meetings done via Zoom, a monthly stitch-in via Zoom continues.  The Stitch-in is the fourth Saturday of each month from 10 am to 12-noon.  Future scheduled dates are 12/26, 1/23/21 and 2/27/21.

Business Meeting

  • For each meeting, we ask members to continue to submit photos of any finishes to Linda D.  Photos need to be submitted to Linda no later than the Tuesday prior the second Saturday of the month.  (Reminds me of the school problem - If a train left Chicago at 10 pm traveling at 65 mpg when.......) This will allow Linda and Caryl the time to work their magic to incorporate your photos into the slide show that will be shared at the meeting.  Please remember to include your name and the designer name in your email.  Following the meetings, the slide shows will be uploaded to the Facebook page.
  • Treasury Report was read.
  • Those darned germs!
The current updated membership roster was shared by Caryl C.
  • The Annual Holiday Exchange will be rescheduled once we can again meet in person.
  • The Anniversary Event is still in the wings.  It is too special to be done virtually!  This event will also be rescheduled once we can again meet in person.
  • Membership renewals are due January 1st for the 2021 year.  Please print, complete and submit your membership form found at this link.

September 2020 Zoom Meeting

We did some Guild Business before launching into this month's program.   An Agenda was prepared but sharing it on the Zoom Meeting proved to be a challenge.   I am sure each month we will be better at what is new technology to many of us.  I give everyone an A+ for effort.

The Treasurer's Report was read.  All deposits and payments are up to date.   Stacy S. will check our Post Office Box for any incoming mail.

Programs

  • The Betsy Morgan kits from the canceled April class have been distributed to all who signed up.
  • October Program - We will have a tour of Kathy R.'s home all decked out for Halloween.
  • December - The Board will meet to decide if we should commit to the Holiday Exchange and how we will accomplish it.  We should have a decision at the October Zoom Meeting.
  • DVHSG October Retreat - There will be a Zoom Meeting on September 24th for those who have signed up.   What to expect during the pandemic and available options for those attending will be shared.
  • Blackbird Designs - Don't forget, Blackbird Designs is our featured designer of the year.

Today's Program

For today, we showcased two of our members, Caryl C. and Linda D.

Caryl provided a powerpoint that listed her 'history'.   She narrated while the slide show shared some of her past hobbies and projects as well as some of her current works.  The PowerPoint presentation has been link in the file section on our FB page.

Next up, Linda had a video that started with a  lovely welcome out front of her home and then she welcomed us inside.  She shared her home, her needlework and her quilting.
Both ladies provided insight into their history.   Whether we also do quilting or do stained glass work or not, we can all appreciate the workmanship and the effort they each put into their various crafts.   Nice job ladies.

Other updates of interest -
  •     How's everyone like our needlework Facebook questions?   A big thank you to Stacy S. for putting them out there each time.   It is fun to see the different responses.   I don't know how she hasn't run out of questions yet!
  •     The Nimble Needle in Merchantville, NJ is now in a bigger location.  The store is not open for business but the owner will be glad to fill your pre-order at curbside.
  •     Winterthur is holding a virtual conference on October 23rd.  It is called "The Inspired Needle: Embroidery Past and Present".   See their website for more details and information on registration.
  •      Don't forget to keep track of your finishes for the 20 in 2020 Challenge.
  •      In August, we held a Zoom-Styled Stitch-In and will be doing it again.   The date for the next stitch-in is September 26 at 9:45.

And we got a special treat while zooming along.  Some participants noticed Kathy R. was in different surroundings.   When we asked where she was, she treated us to the view of the beautiful setting and scenery at her husband's family cabin in Maine.   What an unexpected treat.

We will continue our Zoom Meeting format until we can meet again in person.  A link will be sent prior to each meeting.    If you would like to submit photos for the slideshow, please forward to President Linda D.    You should include your name, the designer and the name of the piece when you submit your photos.  Limit your photos to one or two please.   Linda will need them no later than Tuesday before the meeting and would welcome any submitted earlier.

Thank you to Evalyn and her husband for coordinating our Zoom Meeting.  Thank you as well Linda and everyone else who made the meeting a success.  Looks like this is the way we will continue to 'see' each other for the foreseeable future.

Zooming into August 2020

It has been awhile fellow stitchers so let me try to catch you up.

Many members have been adding their WIP's and finished pieces to the DVHSG Facebook page which is good but it is not the same as getting together.    (This page is open to anyone but you will need to get moderator approval.)  So what did we do......we had a Zoom Meeting this morning.

First, many thanks to Evalyn G. and her tech savvy husband for working with President Linda D. to get this meeting set-up and make it happen.   I think we had close to 40 participate this morning and it was great to see all the smiling faces we haven't seen for awhile.   Not only the regular meeting attendees but we also had participants from Tennessee, Kansas, Connecticut and Luxemburg!   We went international!  Wahoo!  That part of the Zoom meeting was a nice bonus for all of us.

To say the least it was a bit of a learning curve for some of us, myself included.   Everyone was so helpful and guided those of us who were first-time users to the necessary menus.    We learned to "raise our hands" when we had something to say, learned to use voting buttons and only had two or three cat sightings as pets walked in front of their owner's screens.

President Linda D. opened the meeting and welcomed all.   She shared a powerpoint that started with an agenda for the meeting and moved into a Show N' Tell slide show where stitchers spoke about their pieces.  Thank you to all who provided Linda with photos prior to the meeting.   Watch for emails about future Zoom meetings dates with instructions and deadlines for submitting photos. Caryl will be uploading today's powerpoint to Facebook.

First on the agenda, elections are scheduled for this fall.   The two offices on this fall's ballot are Vice President/Program Director and Treasurer.   Linda shared two options for the upcoming elections.

    a.  Due to Covid, we can vote to waive the required elections and extend the office terms by one year; or

    b.  We can select a Nominating Committee and continue with the elections as scheduled.

Both members currently holding offices have agreed to stay on for the next term.   A motion was made and voting was done by using the "yes" or "no" voting boxes in Zoom.   (Aren't we getting snazzy?)  Themotion was carried to have the current officers extend their current terms by one year.

Programming

Betsy Morgan Class - If you signed up to participate in the Betsy Morgan class that was scheduled for April 2020, Stacy sent you an email yesterday regarding how you would like to handle getting your kit.   Please reply to Stacy in the next couple of days so she can arrange to meet you or will mail your kit to you.

Fall Retreat - Stacy will be following up with an email to those who have signed up.  She will provide cost and payment due date.    This year, because of Covid, the Retreat will be in the Lodge.  There will be no stitching in the Lobby of the Lankford.  Masks must be worn, hand sanitizing will be necessary, etc.   Stacy will provide all the details in her email to those attending.

Holiday Smalls Exchange - The exchange is still on for 2020 whether we are meeting or not in December.   In the event we are still unable to meet in person, ideas were discussed about either exchanging names and mailing your items to the person who's name you get or delaying the exchange until we meet again and hold it as a program at a future meeting.  No final decision was made.

Anniversary Event - No date has been set forthe 20th Anniversary Event.  Stacy has been in touch with the designer and the designer has agreed to hold the design as exclusive to DVHSG for one year after she presents it at our Anniversary Celebration.

Stacy asked if anyone has a hobby or collection they would like to share at an upcoming Zoom meeting.  Please let her know.    A video can be made in advance of the meeting and then forwarded to Linda D. to put on the agenda.  Details can be arranged if you decide to share a collection.

Other Class Opportunities

Purple Thread - Sharon Verbos - Sharon is teaching a 3-day Zoom Class in association with Winterthur.   The class cost is $60 for the kit and an additional $30 for the 3 days of Zoom classes.   The classes will be three consecutive Saturdays.   See DVHGS Facebook page or Sharon's Facebook page for more information.

Sassy Jack's - Kim Young - Sassy Jack's is scheduling a Zoom Retreat.   It is a three-day event on a Friday-Satruday-Sunday in September.   The sessions can be watched live and will be recorded to be available to watch when convenient to you.   See Sassy Jack's website for more information.

Great news!   Linda has spoken to Cokesbury and AFTER restrictions are lifted at Cokesbury we are still able to have the use of the room at Cokesbury for our monthly meetings.

Conservation Fund - Ann S. has suggested our Conservation Fund donation this year be made to Winterthur and  be earmarked towards the purchase of the antique sampler in memory of Gloria Seaman Allen.  This was approved by members attending.

Membership - Caryl C. will be sending a membership roster with the next newsletter.  Please check your information for correctness and let Caryl know if there are any errors.   All newsletters are now available in the file section on our Facebook page.   The membership roster WILL NOT be filed on Facebook for privacy reasons.

2020 Challenge - Patrick reminded everyone to maintain their list of completed projects in 2020 and be ready to add them to the list in the binder when we finally do meet again.   Maybe you can find a piece of 3-holed notebook paper for your list and you will be able to slip it right in the binder when the time comes.

Upcoming - We discussed having a Zoom Stitch-in.  Information will be sent when details are worked out.   If you have any other Zoom meeting ideas while we remain under the pandemic restrictions, please pass them to Linda D.

The Zoom meeting was so well attended and with such positive feedback that there is a tentative Zoom meeting for September.  Watch your email for a notice closer to the date.

Thank you tot he Board for deciding to have the Zoom meeting. Thank you again to Evalyn and her hubby for making this happen.  And for Linda for running the meeting and creating the slide show.  Great job.

Hope all are keeping well and continue to stay healthy.

February 2020 Meeting

This month's meeting was held at the Public Library on Kirkwood Highway with guest speaker Cynthia Steinhoff.    We were pleased to welcome Cynthia Steinhoff (and her husband) to give a presentation on Quaker samplers stitched by Delaware girls. She brought some of her own collection and discussed a number of different styles of samplers (i.e. marking, darning, band, genealogical, family record, extract and verse and wreath). She also discussed several different schools such as Brandywine, Wilmington Boarding School, Westtown School and Southern Boarding School. Thank you so much to Cynthia and her husband for sharing this information with us! We will be looking to bring her back to share more information with us!

Cynthia is the director of the Anne-Arundel Library Community College in Baltimore, MD.    She is the co-author with Gloria Seaman Allen of Delaware Discoveries:  Girlhood Embroidery book.  It is an illustrated history of girlhood embroidery in the state of Delaware from 1750 to 1850.   There are beautiful photographs of 190 samplers.  The book was well researched with biographical information on the young stitchers and their families.   A must have book for the dedicated sampler stitcher.  As with everything, this book is available through Amazon.

Dr. Seaman Allen recently passed away.  There is a Facebook group raising funds to gift a sampler (The Mary Orr sampler) to Winterthur Museum in her honor. You can read more about the fundraiser and make an individual donation at the website http://samplings.com/announcement. The guild will be also be discussing a donation at our next board meeting in March.

  • Thank you to all the covered a meeting program during 2019.
  • Thank you to this blogger for the blog posts and uploading photos to Facebook.
Newsletter Reminder
Yahoo has a restriction on the number of emails addresses you can include in one email.  Because of this, Secretary Caryl C. has seven different electronic mailing lists.   This means you may sometimes receive information twice.  It is far easier for Caryl to resend to an entire group than pick and choose and end up having to make a new one-time email group.   Could get confusing real fast.    In addition, if an email is sent and not delivered, Caryl gets no notice from Yahoo that the email was not delivered.   If you are not receiving her notices, please let Caryl know at a meeting.   Routinely within a couple days of each meeting Caryl will send a followup out.   Also, usually the Sunday before a meeting, Caryl sends an email to all members as a reminder.    Caryl will also send a new member package to all new members.

2019 Challenge
The 'challenge' was finish 19 in 19. As a group, we completed 438 projects.  The top three finishers received a special laying tool.  Other top recipients also received laying tools.  Thank you Patrick B. for coordinating this for DVHSG.

2019 SAL
Several members have been stitching the iStitch band sampler.   Several brought their pieces to the meeting.

2020 SAL
Members choose from a list of five designers to select a designer to spot light in 2020.   Blackbird Designs was the winner.   There is no one design to be required to SAL.  Members are encouraged to stitch any Blackbird (or several) of their choice during 2020.

Special Show and Tell

We had three special Show and Tells at our January Meeting.   First, Nancy F. purchased this 1818 sampler for herself.    She believes the "Germantown" in the sampler is for "New Germantown" in Burlington County, NJ.

Member Melanie found these antique doll clothes to add to her collection.   The bead work and trims are very detailed.
The little doll corset even has bones!

Our very own member, designer Theresa Baird debuted her latest creation.   This is the Virginia Sampler and is number 6 in her series of samplers for the 13 original colonies.    Virginia is a big one!     It is stitched on 40 count and still dwarfs the wind chair behind it.
If you have seen any of her pieces, you know she creates beautiful borders and well written original verses.    This piece will be an online class.    See her work under Hearts Ease as Exemplar Workes.

Shout Out to DVHSG
In the Sampler Consortium Press Release from the Delaware Historical Society, Delaware Valley Historic Sampler Guild was mentioned twice!
