January 2019 Meeting

In January we shared stitching related items we received for Christmas.  Such fun to see the other wonderful goodies stitchers received and maybe even got a few ideas of things to add to our own wish lists.

Patrick recounted the 2018 Stitching Challenge and awarded the top 20 stitchers who were the top finishers in 2018 with tape measures!    32 members participated completing 295 projects in 2018.  Patrick  challenged members to complete 19 projects in 2019.

Our Conservation Committee awarded funds to both the Gloucester County Historical Society and to Winterthur for 2018.    Gloucester County will be restoring two samplers that will complete the restoration of their set of six family samplers.     Winterthur will use the funds towards the creation of a catalog for the Erica Wilson Exhibit.  The Erica Wilson Exhibit will be sometime in 2020.

The Conservation Committee Chair, Ann S. will be creating and sending out post cards to potential applicants earlier in the year this year to allow more time for applicants to submit their applications for funds.

- Reminder - Dues for 2019 membership is now due.   Please make your check payable to DVHSG and give to Treasurer Nancy F.    If mailing, please address to DVHSG, PO Box 1292, Hockessin, DE 19707.

- Upcoming Meetings -
February:  We will be assembling a Valentine's Humbug.  Secretary Caryl C. has emailed members the pattern for the Valentine’s Humbug.  Stitcher's are to use linen and fibers from your stash.  Bring your completed pre-stitch to the February Meeting.  Also bring to the February Meeting ribbon or cording for hanging, tassel (optional), and charms or embellishments (also optional).   Stuffing will be provided.  Member Carolyn N. will teach us how to assemble our humbug.  Carolyn suggests when backstitching around the piece for joining, use two threads rather than the one as noted in the pattern. Two stands will be easier to see, especially if you decide to use a thread that matches the color of your background fabric.

Stitch-a-long:  This year our SAL will be the iStitch Amethyst Band Sampler.   The pattern is available through the iStitch page on Facebook.   The  cost is $27.   Each week a new portion of the pattern is delivery via email.  The band sampler is 73 stitches wide by 1,000 stitches long.   Sassy Jacks Stitchery has the banding but fabric choice is your option.  Although it is the 'Amethyst' sampler, you can stitch it in any color on any color linen.  Caryl C. is working on a section to personalize for DVHSG.

On February 3rd, Bergen County Historical Society will unveil the two samplers restored using Conservation Funds from DVHSG.

On February 9th, member Theresa Baird will be formally revealing her Burlington County, NJ sampler at Needleworker's Delight in Metuchen, NJ   See their website for more information.

Woodlawn:  Member Pat Y. has again offered to take any member pieces to Woodland.  Please contact Pat to make arrangements to deliver your needlework.   See the Woodlawn's website  for the brochure and entry form.
March: Teacher Pamela Darney will share her "color throw-down" technique for selecting thread colors during the regularly scheduled meeting. Pamela will bring a trunk show to the meeting.

There is an afternoon class which required sign-up by the January Meeting.    The class consists of a quaker motif sampler with a section that will be personalized for DVHSG.   Also as part of the sampler, Pam will demonstrate her  technique for joining two pieces of linen together.

Stacy is hoping to incorporate a field trip with Pamela on the Friday prior to the meeting and a lecture on samplers for Friday evening.  Watch the newsletter for details as they are confirmed.
April:  At the April meeting we will make an ort box out of fabric.  More details will be provided at the February meeting.

April: Semi-annual retreat at Salty Yarns will be April 26-28.   There is a $50 non-refundable deposit necessary.  More details will follow.
July:  Francine C. will be teaching a Victorian style Christmas ornament.  The ornaments will be made using perforated paper and stitching embellishments.  More info will follow.
August: Our annual stash relocation event.
November: For November, we will have two designers.  Beth Steele of Summerhouse Stitch Workes, and Janice Note of Noteworthy Needle will be with us for a day and a half of classes.

During the meeting, we will learning how to drill a foam pumpkin to prepare it for cross stitching during our regularly scheduled meeting.  More information will follow on the afternoon class and the Sunday half-day class.

20th Anniversary:  We will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary in 2020. Please let any officer know if you would like to be on the committee to plan the event.
